This is Teacher Gaby!

Interpersonal Dimension of Teaching...

This is the most touching part of teaching because it is when you demonstrate your value as a person. Of course, your English and Teaching ability are important, but let’s also remember that you’re are not a better teacher thanks to your clothing but to your ethics and values when talking to co-workers, students and parents.

Co-workers
They will be your first headache. From my student teaching experience I can tell of some teachers that cried over others opinions. Therefore, our intrapersonal dimension must be in the top ten of our strengths. Good things will never be easy so don’t get frustrated in your first failure when supporting your ideas or giving suggestions. Most of the older people will see you as a little kid that doesn’t know anything at first sight and later they will look at you as a menace. In spite the circumstances chill out your head and think positive.

Students

Be prepared for everything since the “Lepina” is here. At some rate this new law has provoked some impact among experienced teachers (they have been teaching for more than ten years), those who were educated when the teacher could physically attack a student in the name of discipline. It seems we have totally misunderstood the concept of discipline as verbal or physical aggression with its psychological consequences. Having this said, it is understandable why these people make a fuss about it.

In my opinion, this law is pretty interesting thanks to the different possibilities it offers to the educative community. For instance: dialogue instead of running in the soccer field at 11:00 am. Students disciplinary committee with real responsibilities in their hands. More autonomous students  and less “wrinkled” teachers. Therefore, when talking to students we really need to give our words some thought before having a slip of mouth and traumatise that poor teenager for the rest of his life. For students, their teacher conception about them is as important as their self-image. Though there will always be some exceptions with those students who try to step on you. Those who had been educated with wrong ideas of pride and humbleness. Moreover, some of these kids will feel so insecure that will try to avoid the idea of having a figure of authority such as the Teacher. They will make big efforts to avoid the professor even outside the classroom for an informal chat. In summary, be as good as you want but smart as possible.

Parents

There is some kind of complicity between parents and teachers in the students learning process: there should exist mutual communication and support to each other for the youngster sake.

Since it is not so probable that parents follow track of their children, it is advisable for the teacher to keep a register of his or her students behavior and academic performance.
Two main reasons support this statement:
a)We are part of their learning therefore, we not only teach subjects but values.
b)It is wise to have a backup when parents come to have a particular conversation about their son/daughter. For example: A girl lied to her mother to talk to her teacher in order to change her grade. But the smart teacher had written describing the situation in which that grade was gained so the student could not lie anymore. Later on, the mother was more concerned so she followed a better track of her daughter.

To summarize, we’ll only be capable of having good interpersonal relationships if our emotional intelligence is in its best version, updated. This means, managing a high self-esteem which enhances our value as a person.
