Social Dimension of Teaching...
It is known as the worst paid job, it is known as a “lazy people” career but it’s also one of the most beautiful professions: It is teaching. Socially rejected but needed. It is the school one of the places that most influence us to define the citizen we will become someday, moreover the kind of person we’ll become someday. During this whole process I’ve learned that a teacher’s labor goes further than a classroom, that there are some beliefs of what means to be a good teacher, and that our school system has a poor social projection.
First, a teacher can change student’s life positively or negatively. The abuse of power or the amount of assignment will make school a torture and a tyrant of the teacher. But this is not big deal” you might say, once you’re off school there’s no problem. Surprisingly, it is a huge problem. The kind of input that is given from a teacher to reinforce or evolve a student’s conduct will affect its personal development: self-esteem, interpersonal relationships and behavior will be inflected by all of those words and actions accomplished by the teacher in a sweet and innocent classroom. Have me as an example, my teacher made my life miserable so it’s been hard for me to trust others. My teacher class went further than the mere science room.
Secondly, there are some beliefs around “what means to be a good teacher”.
Some think a good teacher is the one that is strict, the one who’s always right. Some others believe in the one who always smiles and never gets mad at people even if its rights are being violated. And also we have the super teacher who never gets sick or tired, who has everything under control and has kryptonite under his or her desk. There are no super teachers. But there are a few consciously ethic teachers who are aware of their work; there are some teachers around that really care about their students and do lesson planning, those who elicit learning through different meaningful activities, those who speak English in the English class, and those who promote a nice relaxed classroom environment. Of course, they struggle with hunger, public transportation, and lack of resources and critics of their co-workers who are among the average careless teacher. To conclude, due to this contrasted realities our school system has a poor social projection. The lack of ethic teachers and the lack of resources demotivate not only our teachers but our students;it has provoked rejection of being a better citizen. In other words, the lack of values is destroying our society from school, the less democratic place on the earth.
